Book Review: The Lyme Diet by Dr. Nicola McFadzean

The Lyme Diet by Dr. Nicola McFadzean strikes a good balance between ultra restrictive diets and ignoring food as medicine. Don't get me wrong, compared to the standard American diet it's extremely restrictive with the basic principles being no gluten, no dairy, and no sugar. But compared to an incredibly restrictive diet, like the autoimmune protocol, it's a diet you can stick to while still being able to dine out and not spend every waking hour cooking meals from scratch.

Like most anti-inflammatory diets, there are restrictions on gluten-containing grains and dairy, but unlike some anti-inflammatory diets, one is still allowed eggs, rice, beans, and potatoes. Any anti-inflammatory diet has to be individualized and changeable over time. Think of this as a starting off point, not a forever diet.

The Lyme Diet is a quick read. It's not published by a major press, so there are some aspects that are slightly unpolished, but it didn't take away from the information presented. This is also a comprehensive book about Lyme and wellness. It gives clear and concise suggestions about things like detoxification, supplementation, and treatment. There is also a list of resources and referrals.

Eating healthy foods most days is better than no day. This is a good reference guide for what foods may enhance your healing.

I read this years ago and always felt conflicted about diets for Lyme. Great review! It's definitely about finding what works for you because no one diet fits all, you have to adjust it to your needs.

I feel it's a jumping off point. If you are going from the standard American diet to this, it's a big change. Most of us have been on restricted diets for years, and some foods that are recommended in this book we might not eat.

Thanks for the review! I read most of her other book on Lyme but hadn't gotten around to this one yet. I follow mostly the same protocol as the one you outlined, so that made me feel good! I agree though, it has to be individualized. You know best what works for you. Thanks for this post, very helpful!

Thanks Kirsten! It's a good book for people new to a restrictive diet or people like me, who need it simplified! I'm grateful that I've had a few years of trial and error and finally feel like I am getting it.
