To paraphrase my social work role model, Brené Brown, feeling joy is a vulnerable emotion. Many of us are afraid to fully feel joy, because we either feel we don't deserve it or we are waiting for the other shoe to drop. That's why Brené says that joy is a spiritual practice—it takes practice to feel unencumbered joy without also feeling fear. Brené suggests that the antidote to that fear is gratitude. When you feel joyful and that discomfort starts to set it, simply remind yourself what you are grateful for in that moment and do whatever you can to enjoy it. Healing Words is an ongoing series with the intention of once a day shifting focus away from suffering and onto healing. Healing is a daily practice of listening to your inner voice and turning pain into purpose. Please feel free to share words that have helped you heal or your thoughts on these healing words.
