Therapy

I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with an office in West Seattle. I am a self-employed therapist in private practice.

A good fit for my practice is a client who is highly motivated and committed to regular weekly sessions. There is no timeline for therapy; however, I use a long-term therapeutic approach (think months instead of weeks).

I consider myself to be a somatic therapist and practice based on a modality called Somatic Transformation. I also incorporate mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and psychodynamic theory.

This 9 minute video describes the basis for the therapeutic interventions of somatic therapy: Trauma and the Nervous System: A Polyvagal Perspective.

I serve clients ages 18-60. I serve people of all gender identities; however, I predominantly work with women and clients who identify as women, as well as, those who are gender non-conforming.

Specialties: Anxiety, ADHD, Chronic/Complex Illness, Life Transitions, Developmental Trauma, Chronic Stress, Mindfulness, Somatic, Spirituality. I do not specialize in bipolar disorder or personality disorders.

I am a Lyme-Literate Therapist with extensive knowledge on the challenges of Lyme disease and treatment.

Limitations:

  • I am licensed to practice in Washington State. I do not work with residents of other states or International clients.
  • I do not work with people who are acquainted with any of my current or past clients. This is due to the conflict of interest.
  • I do not work with clients who have a firearm in the home.
  • I am not a good fit for those who need a higher level of care, such as: people who have had a mental health hospitalization within the past few years, people who have frequent suicidal thoughts or behaviors, and people who experience breaks with reality.

For people who at times need a higher level of care, I suggest looking into a modality called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) or a person who specializes in the treatment of a particular mental health issue.

As a cisgendered, heterosexual, white, straight-sized person I have access to multiple layers of privilege. I am committed to continually examine and challenge my internal biases and recognize the ways in which my privilege may impact the therapeutic relationship. Social justice, equity, and inclusion are important tenets of my practice and I will continually work to expand my awareness and understanding of these issues. When I am responsible for harm, I will do my best to acknowledge it and work toward accountability and repair.

New Client Inquiries: my preferred method of contact is email at contact@kerryjheckman.com. Please specify a referral source (person or website).
Unfortunately I am not taking new clients at this time (updated 2/1/2023). I do not keep a waiting list, as openings are unpredictable, but feel free to email to inquire about availability.

Please note: Calling or emailing does not initiate a therapist-client relationship.

Referrals: Mindful Therapy Group is a local network of hundreds of therapists in Western Washington and surrounding states. It is a good place to start if you are having difficult locating a therapist.
